Diagnosis requires a team approach.
The surgeon obtains a detailed history of symptoms and gives a careful breast examination. He may do a fine needle biopsy.
The radiologist will then do any imaging required such as Mammography, Ultrasound, Fine needle biopsy, Core Biopsy.
The Pathologist will look at the cells under the microscope and give a diagnosis if possible. Most tests need to be done together to give a high level of accuracy.
A multidisciplinary setting is gold standard for diagnosis as it incorporates all these specialties at one visit, which allows for prompt diagnosis and treatment options.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound assisted clinical examination provides maximum information to the clinician differentiating solid from cystic lumps and guiding needle biopsies.
Mammography
Remains the most sensitive test for detecting breast changes; such as calcification and architectural distortion, in the breast at an early stage. This imaging can be done at the time of your consultation if necessary.

Needle Biopsy
This procedure may need to be performed to get a more accurate diagnosis of the area of concern. A small needle is inserted into the area to withdraw some tissue that can then be looked at under the microscope by the pathologist.
Core Biopsy
This procedure is performed if the needle biopsy does not give enough accurate information. An injection of local anesthetic to the area of concern is given.
Then under mammogram or ultrasound guidance a larger needle is used to take out a larger amount of tissue. The result
Breast MRI
Breast MRI, when combined with mammography is safe and effective in the diagnosis of breast cancer in asymptomatic women at high risk, when used by specialists as part of an organised surveillance program. This may also be needed to aid in the planning for surgery depending on individual circumstances.
